Action Α.1: “Recording of the existing situation regarding the waste management scheme as well as the quantity and synthesis of the waste generated in the municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia”

The aim of this activity is the recording of the existing situation regarding the management of Urban Solid Waste in the municipalities of Maroussi and MandraEidyllia Hence during the implementation of this action there will be a performance of the collection of the required data for the collection transport, management and disposal system in the selected municipalities.

Action A.2: “Selection of 100 households in the municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia that will participate in the large scale demonstration of the Recycling@Home system”

The aim of this action is the configuration of the appropriate methodology for the selection of the 100 for the municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra- Eiddyllia that will participate in the large scale demonstration for the Recycling @Home Project (Action Β.4). The process for the selection of the households will be based on data that will come up from the completion of a developed questionnaire that will be distributed and completed by the residents of the municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia.

Action Α.3: “Review and assessment of the existing recycling schemes and technologies in Europe and worldwide”

The aim of the this action is the review and assessment of the existing recycling schemes and technologies in Europe and worldwide. For this reason within the action a trip to Denmark will be organized and a visit in municipalities which are considered success case studies regarding the waste management similar to the municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia.

Action A.4: “Review and assessment of existing legislation and technical reports on the End-of-Waste criteria of the Recycling@Home products”

The aim of this action is the review and assessment of existing legislation and technical reports on the End-of-Waste criteria of the Recycling@Home products. Extensive research will be made on the input materials criteria, the requirements on treatment processes and techniques, the Recycling@Home products quality and the market opportunities in Greece for the recovered materials.

Action Β.1: “Design of a prototype, innovative household system for the separation and volume minimization of recyclable household waste”

Acitivity Β.1.1: “Preliminary design considerations of the home recycling system for the separation and pre-treatment of plastic, metal and paper waste.”

The aim of this activity is the performance of the preliminary design consideration of the home recycling system under which the following will be determinated:

  • The main component parts of the prototype recycling system,
  • The operatingcompressionratio,
  • The dimensions of the components,
  • The number and types of the different recyclable waste streams for the recovery of the materials and
  • The number of the channels of the system where there will be the collection and the compression of the recyclable waste

Activity Β.1.2: “Design of the prototype home recycling system”

The main aim of this activity is the design of the prototype home recycling system where there will be successful separation of the household waste e.g. plastic, metal and paper. The factors that will play a part in the final design will be the following:

  • Waste characteristics and environmental impacts and compliance with the national and European legislation and the end of the waste criteria (Action Α4),
  • Minimization of the volume of the preselected material
  • Minimization of the energy consumption,
  • Increasing of the compression ratio,
  • Production of recovered products of commercial values,
  • High output of the system,
  • The maximization of the storage capacity of the system.

Activity Β.1.3: “Energy Considerations”

The aim of this action is the calculations of the energy requirements of the system according to the electrical energy that is required for the operation of the system. The design will be implemented in a way where there will be reduction of the energy requirements for the operation of the system.

Action Β.2: “Engineering, construction and installation of the innovative household system for the separation and volume minimization of plastic, metal and paper waste”

Activity Β.2.1 “Manufacturing of the prototype system components – parts”

In this activity the following are predicted:

  • The construction of the component parts of the system,
  • The assemblage of the parts for the construction of the prototype system and
  • The installation of the system in the Unit of the Environmental Science and Technology of the National Technical University of Athens.

Activity Β.2.2: “Preliminary testing of the prototype household recycling system (preliminary period of operation)”

The aim of this action will be the preliminary testing of the prototype household recycling system (preliminary period of operation) in the Unit of Environmental Science and Technology in NTUA. From the preliminary operation of the system possible modifications in the designing of the system will be monitored.

Action Β.3: “Operation, optimization and assessment of the pilot home recycling system”

Activity Β.3.1 “Operation of the pilot home recycling system”

The aim of this activity is:

  • The large scale laboratory monitoring of this prototype recycling system under different feedstock quality and quantity and operating conditions and
  • The implementation of the possible modifications in the design and the construction of the system for the improvement of the operation of the system.

 

Activity Β.3.2 “Optimization of the pilot home recycling system”

The aim of this activity is the improvement of the pilot recycling system ς considering the following parameters:

  • Minimization of the volume of the recyclables,
  • Production of materials with commercial value with technical characteristics that meet quality standards,
  • The level of the separation that has been achieved and
  • Minimization of the energyconsumption

 

Activity Β.3.3.: “Assessment of the pilot home recycling system”

The aim of this activity is the implementation of the evaluation of the pilot recycling system regarding the:

  • performance,
  • operationalease,
  • flexibility,
  • economic feasibility and environmental sustainability.

Activity Β.3.4.: “Preparation of operational manual”

The aim of this activity is the development of a manual for the operation and maintenance of the improved pilot recycling system in which will be appear including:

  • The component parts of the system,
  • The operatinginstructions,

Action Β.4: “Demonstration of the prototype home recycling system-Suggestions for full-scale implementation”

Activity Β.4.1.: “Procurement of the Recycling@Home demonstration units”

The aim of this activity is the installation of the 100 pilot recycling systems that will be used for the full scale demonstration, in the selected households of the municipality of Maroussi and Mandras- Eidyllias

Activity Β.4.2: “Installation and demonstration of the Recycling@Home units in the selected households – Assessment of the demonstration phase”

The aim of this activity is the installation and the operation of 100 pilot recycling systems in 50 households in the municipality of Maroussi and 50 households in the municipality of Mandra-Eidyllia for a period of 8 months. More specifically, the recyclable and compressed material will be collected from the households, transported with the municipality trucks and transferred in properly configured and predefined points in the municipalities with a fixed frequency of collection. For this phase there will be appropriate training and information to households on the use and operation of the system (Activity D.3 αnd D.3).

Activity B.4.3.: “Suggestions for full-scale implementation in the municipality of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia”

The aim is to provide information in the form of proposals for the implementation of the system in full-scale considering the environmental economic and social impacts of the project.

Actions C: Monitoring of the impact of the project actions

Action C.1: “Evaluation of the current environmental impact regarding waste production and management schemes in the municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia”

The aim is to assess the environmental impact of existing waste management in the Municipality of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia through the use of appropriately environmental indicators.

Action C.2: “Evaluation of the current socio-economic impact of the waste management scheme applied in the municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia”

The aim is to assess the socioeconomic impact of existing waste management in the Municipality of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia using appropriately configured socioeconomic indicators.

Action C.3: “Evaluation of the environmental impact of the Recycling@Home project”

The aim is to assess the environmental impact (a) during the demonstration of the household recycling system in 100 households and (b) also in the case of large scale implementation system.

Activity C.3.1.: “Evaluation of the environmental impact of the large scale demonstration of the project”

The aim of the activity is to assess the environmental impact of the large scale demonstration of the pilot household recycling system in the 100 households in the municipalities of Maroussi and MandraEidyllia. The environmental indicators set in Action C.1 will be re-assessed and evaluated periodically (every month) during the demonstration phase against the initial situation and the quantified targets that will be set during this Action.

Activity C.3.2: “Life Cycle Assessment of the Recycling@Home demonstration units"

In the framework of this activity, the LCA analysis of the Recycling@Home demonstration units will be performed. Suitable and internationally accepted software tools will be employed (such as SimaPro7) that are able to model and analyze complex life cycles in a systematic and transparent way. The methodology that will be used for assessing potential environmental  impacts from the Recycling@Home system, will be based on suitable indicators such as: abiotic depletion, global warming, photochemical oxidation, ozone layer depletion, human toxicity, fresh water aquatic ecotoxicity, marine aquatic ecotoxicity,  terrestrial ecotoxicity, acidification, eutrophication etc..

Activity C.3.3: “Evaluation of the environmental impact of the full scale implementation of the project”

The aim of the activity is to evaluate the environmental impacts in the case of the implementation of household recycling system in all the selected households of the Municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia (large scale). The evaluation will be implemented by comparing the environmental indicators that reflect the current situation (Activity C1) and setting up new appropriate indicators.

Action C.4: “Evaluation of the socio-economic impact of the Recycling@Home project to the municipalities of Maroussi and MandraEidyllia”

The aim is to assess the socioeconomic impacts (a) during the demonstration of the household recycling system in 100 households and (b) in the case of the large scale implementation system.

Action C.4.1.: “Evaluation of the socio-economic impacts of the large scale demonstration of the project (100 households)”

The aim of the activity is to assess the socioeconomic impact of the pilot demonstration household recycling system in 100 households in the municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra- Eidyllia (Activity B.4). The evaluation will be done by comparing the environmental indicators that reflect the current situation (Action C.2) and setting up new socioeconomic indicators.

Activity C.4.2.: “Evaluation of the socio-economic impacts of the full scale implementation of the project”

The aim of the activity is the evaluation of the socio-economic impact of the potential full scale implementation of the project after its completion to all households of the two municipalities (Action B.4). The evaluation will be implemented by comparing the environmental indicators that reflect the current situation (Activity C.2) and setting up new socioeconomic indicators.

Actions D: Communication and dissemination actions

Action D.1: “Development and updating of the project website”

The aim is to create an interactive page. The website will include the following: (i) general information on the project, (ii) the methodology followed for implementation of the project (iii) actions deliverables (iv) new and old useful links (vi) information on the partners (vii) interactive communication with users (viii) contact information. It is written in two languages (English, Greek).

Activity D.3.2.: “Organization of educational events”

The aim of the two education events is the information of schools (high school students and/or school) in the Municipalities of Maroussi and Mandra-Eidyllia for:
• the environmental impact of existing methods of waste management,
• for the purpose, objectives, actions and expected results of the project
• labeling of the importance of recycling and sorting of waste at the source.

In addition, there will be a presentation of the results from the laboratory tests of the household recycling system at NTUA. Finally, there will be recording of the students who participated in the events in order to increase the potential households that volunteered to participate in the large scale demonstration of the pilot household recycling system (Activity B. 4).

Activity D.3.3.: “Publications in National and International scientific and technical journals – Information kiosk-DVD”

Activity D.3.4: “Organisation of a Scientific Conference”

A Scientific Conference will be organized in Tinos Island on Sustainable Solid Waste Management, where all relevant parties from Greece and from European countries shall be invited to participate. The scientific conference will be co-hosted with the conference entitled ISWM TINOS 2015: 3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE. This conference is organized by NTUA in the framework of the project ISWM (LIFE10 ENV/GR/000610) and it will be held on Tinos Island on 2-4 July 2015. A specific parallel session will be devoted for the Recycling@Home project, where the results of the project will be presented.

Actions E: Project management and monitoring of the project progress

Action E.1: “Project management and reporting to the EC”

The aim of this action is the project management for the smooth and efficient implementation of the project.

Activity E.1.1: “Project coordination”

Responsibilities such as monitoring progress, managing different priorities, the optimal flow of information, dissemination of program activities, the flow of communication and the full economic coordination of the work included in this activity under the full supervision of the project coordinator Amaroussion Municipality. Nevertheless, both the coordinating beneficiary and the associated beneficiaries will provide the necessary staff for the fulfillment of the project activities.

Activity E.1.2: “Project Committees”

The aim of this activity is the creation and staffing of appropriate committees for achieving the best results as possible. The two committees established is for promoting the successful implementation of the project on the Steering Committee and the Management Committee headed by the beneficiary coordinator Amaroussion Municipality.

Activity E.1.3: “Kick-off meeting”

The aim of the activity is the organization of the kick of meeting in order to publicize the program Recycling@Home. The event identifies the roles and responsibilities of each beneficiary and its partners, the staffing of the organizing committee, the assignment of activities in each partner, methods of communication, any problem or limitation and the design of subsequent project work.

Activity E.1.4: “Reporting to the EC”

The aim of the activity is reporting to the European Commission regarding technical and financial progress of the project. More specifically, for the duration of the project for one (1) inception report, one (1) midterm report and one (1) final report.

Action Ε.2: “Monitoring and evaluation”

Activity Ε.2.1.: “Development of End-of-Action Reports”

The aim of the activity is the development of reports for three categories of project activities when they are going to be completed (A - Preliminary actions, B - Operations and Implementation of the project.

Activity Ε.2.2.: “Evaluation of the performance indicators”

The aim is to evaluate the reports completion of project actions (Activity E.2.1) from the project team and the monitoring of indicators of progress of the project as they have been defined within the project.

Action Ε.3: “External audit”

The aim of this action is to review the economic situation of all beneficiaries provided to the Commission during the final deliverable. The purpose of the audit is to verify the correct and full application of national law, accounting rules and the common rules of LIFE + financial instrument at work.

 

Action Ε.4: “Networking and communication with other projects and media platforms”

The aim is the networking and the communication with projects and/or media platforms with similar discipline, which have been completed or are in progress in order to effectively exchange knowledge and experience.
