The European Programme LIFE+ is the EU’s basic funding instrument for the environment. The key objective of LIFE is to contribute to the successful implementation and enforcement of EU environmental policy and legislation as well as the achievement of the objectives of the “Europe 2020” strategy.

LIFE began in 1992 and until today there have been three complete implementation phases of the programme (LIFE I: 1992-1995, LIFE II: 1996-1999 and LIFE III: 2000-2006). During this period LIFE has co-financed some 3104 projects across the EU, contributing approximately € 2.2 billion to the protection of the environment. It is worth mentioning that, for the current phase of the programme (2007-2013), LIFE+ has allocated a total budget of €2.143.409 billion.

The European Commission has already announced the continuation of the Programme for the new programming period 2014-2020, designed thus as to integrate two sub-programmes: a) for the environment and b) for climate action.
